When you buy your new gas cooker, it has to be connected to your gas supply. This is called a gas cooker connection. Normally a gas cooker is fitted by connecting a flexible pipe from the oven to the gas supply. This is usually for free standing cookers, gas ovens and Range cookers. However, if it is a gas hob, the wires are not flexible and are solid copper pipes.
Gas Cooker connections should be carried out by registered Gas Safe engineers otherwise you are putting your property at risk from gas leakages and carbon monoxide poisoning if the cooker is not installed correctly.
Depending on your cooker, you gas cooker connection may be connected by different types of pipes. For free standing or range cookers, your gas cooker connection would use a flexible pipe. This allows you to move the appliance to a certain extent to enable cleaning around the appliance.
On the other hand Gas hob installations should use solid copper pipes. This is more difficult as it is not just a case of piecing things together like a normal gas cooker connection, this requires the engineer to solder the pipe once it has been cut down to the required size. Soldering the copper pipes allows there to be no room for leaks through the pipe if carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
