When having a gas cooker installation there are specific regulations that apply to ensure safe and correct use and maintenance. These gas cooker regulations have been put in place and must be followed by law.
Any gas cookers installation should be completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is competent and qualified. Anyone who is not Gas Safe registered and completes your gas cooker installation has carried out illegal work and will not comply with the gas cooker regulations.
The regulations for a freestanding gas cooker with a high level grill require a minimum of 610mm clearance above the grill. A minimum of 20mm is required either side of the appliance. After the gas cookers installation is completed, the engineer will ensure that the appropriate space is there. If you have any queries about your appliance you should always refer to the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
When it comes to hobs a minimum of 750mm clearance is required above a gas hob to a cooker hood. The gap may be reduced to 727mm above a gas hob on the condition that the hood is cleaned regularly to prevent fire hazards. This should be checked by an engineer when having a gas cooker installation carried out. Any wall units that are either side of the hood must be at least 366mm above. A minimum of 300mm clearance is required either side of the hob if being installed next to flammable material. To ensure you comply with gas cooker regulations you must make sure that there is space to accommodate the measurements of the new gas cooker, oven, hood and hobs before your installation.
Due to new gas regulations any appliance installed in specific buildings must contain a Flame Supervision Device. A Flame Supervision Device is part of the gas burner system. The device detects if the flame is extinguished and cuts off the gas supply. This affects flats and multi-dwelling buildings which include dual purpose properties i.e. flats above shops. It does not include detached, semi-detached or terraced houses.
Most gas cookers come with flame supervision devices. In order to check if a gas cooker has a Flame Supervision Device before purchasing it, you should check on the device list. However, stand alone gas-only cookers have not enabled this at all. This is because many stand alone gas cookers have no electric supply.
